The medical term ‘Cachexia’ is derived from the Greek word ‘Kakhexia’ – kakos (bad) + hexis (state, condition). Cachexia is defined as a state of general ill health characterized by malnutrition, muscle wasting, weight loss, weakness and emaciation, usually occurring in association with a debilitating chronic disease or severe disease such as tuberculosis (TB), cancer, acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), etc.

Cachexia is also known as Cachexy. A cachexic or cachectic condition is the state of health characterized by cachexia.
