An inertial frame of reference is defined as a frame of reference in which Newton’s first law of motion is valid.
Examples of inertial frames of reference are as follows –
- The earth is approximately an inertial frame of reference. It is not completely an inertial frame of reference because of the acceleration associated with its rotation on its own axis and its motion around the sun.
- Any frame of reference moving relative to an inertial frame of reference with constant velocity is also an inertial frame of reference.
